More DePuy Recalls to Come?

The DePuy hip replacement recall shocked the medical and legal communities. DePuy’s two hip replacement lines, the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System had been implanted in 93,000 people. Components from the two metal-on-metal implants ground against one another, shedding metal ions in recipients. The implants could cause pain, swelling, dislocation, and metallosis. The disaster has spawned hundreds of DePuy hip replacement lawsuits, and some people estimate that thousands may eventually be filed.

Now, the situation has worsened. On top of the DePuy recall, another line of DePuy metal-on-metal hip replacements, the Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System, may suffer from the same design defects as the ASR lines. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received at least 500 complaints regarding this line of implants. The story is the same: severe pain and metal ions in the hip region and bloodstream. The number of Pinnacle hip replacement recipients is unknown, and whether it fails as often as DePuy’s ASR implants—12 to 13 percent of the time for both—isn’t known either. Already, some recipients have begun filing Pinnacle hip replacement lawsuits.

By know it is clear that DePuy’s metal-on-metal hip replacements, which use a new technology designed alleged to be more durable than other implants, are downright dangerous.
